Whole Dog & Cat Journal’s Updated Approved Foods List
The Whole Dog & Cat Journal’s reviews identify the hallmarks of a top dry dog & cat foods on a yearly basis.
In “Whole Dog & Cat Journal’s 2012 Dry Dog & Cat Food Review,” 48 companies made the selection criteria for a top dry dog & cat food.
Cancer is rampant in our pets these days, along with pre-mature kidney failure.
Some cancers may not be avoidable, due to genetics, and certain vaccines, but I do believe that some forms of Cancer come from the artificial ingredients in our pets foods such as Ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT and the artificial food colors and artificial flavor enhancers they add to our pets foods.
Ethoxyquin, BHA & BHT are not allowed in human food, but these harmful preservatives are still being used in some pet foods & treats.
We as consumers can make a choice to buy pet foods that do not use these ingredients, and all of the foods above, do not.
Please do your research, read the ingredients label thoroughly and know what you’re feeding your pets. Here’s to a very Healthy New Year for you and your pets!

In “Whole Dog & Cat Journal’s 2012 Dry Dog & Cat Food Review,” 48 companies made the selection criteria for a top dry dog & cat food.
- Addiction Foods
- Breeder’s Choice (Pinnacle, Avoderm, available at Petco)
- Castor & Pollux (I buy this for my dogs & cats, available at Petco and the HEB at Vintage Park)
- Darford International (new to list this year)
- Diamond Pet Products (specifically Taste of the Wild and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul) (Diamond does produce some foods that I don’t approve of, some have been re-called in the past, probably due to the plant conditions the food was made in, but I do like these two listed)
- Natural Balance (I feed this to my cats, the pink & blue bag only)
- Dogswell (available at Randall’s, I buy this from time to time for my dogs)
- Best Breed (new to list this year)
- Dr. Tim’s
- Evanger’s (Dr. Knapp carries this in her clinic)
- Fromm Family Foods (Natural Pawz carries this)

The most caring thing you can do as a pet owner is to tag and microchip your pets.
According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP), less than 2% of cats and only 15 to 20% of dogs are returned to their owners. Most of these were identified with tags, tattoos or microchips.
The majority of cats and dogs that go missing without ID never make it back home.
Please make sure your pets have current tags on their collars and wear them at all times, even if they are indoor animals! Most strays are lost pets who were not kept properly indoors or provided with identification.
Petco, Walmart and many other retailers have tag stations where you can make and print your own tags for about $6 - $10. Your pets depend solely on you to keep them safe - don't let them down!
As part of your deed restrictions, you cannot breed animals in Gleannloch for profit, so please consider spaying and neutering your pets.
The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for a year.
5 out of 10 dogs in shelters and 7 out of 10 cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them.
An animal that ends up in a shelter has less than a 50% chance of getting out alive!
